Shimano Beastmaster MD 12000 Electric Reel

The Shimano Beastmaster MD 12000 is a heavy-duty electric reel for offshore deep-drop fishing. Its Giga-Max motor, reinforced drivetrain and high-capacity spool are designed around powered retrieval, while the colour LCD provides an interface for monitoring and operating the reel.

Who should consider the MD 12000?

Consider it when repeated deep retrieves and substantial line-capacity requirements are central to your fishing. Powered winding can reduce the manual effort involved in checking baits and resetting a drift, but the complete system still needs to suit the load and conditions.

At a listed 2300g before line and other equipment, it is a substantial reel. Check reel-seat fit, rod compatibility and how the assembled outfit will be supported and handled on your boat.

Choosing your braid and capacity

The listed PE capacities are:

• PE6: 1660m.
• PE8: 1200m.
• PE10: 900m.
• PE12: 760m.

PE numbers describe line size, not breaking strain in kilograms or pounds. Actual capacity depends on braid diameter and spooling. Choose braid to suit your tackle and fishing requirements, then allow for line angle and reserve rather than treating spool capacity as a direct water-depth rating.

Understanding the 43kg drag figure

The listed 43kg maximum drag is not a recommended working setting and does not mean the motor can continuously lift that load. Drag pressure, electric winding capability and safe outfit loading are different considerations.

Set working drag to suit your rod, braid, leader, knots and fishing method. Follow the operating manual's load and usage guidance rather than relying on the maximum drag number.

Gear ratio and manual retrieve

The specifications list a 2.4:1 gear ratio, 53cm retrieve per crank and an 80/92mm handle length. The 53cm figure describes line pickup per handle turn, not electric retrieve speed in metres per minute. Pickup also changes with spool fill.

Electric retrieval performance depends on operating conditions and load. Do not derive motor speed or lifting capability from the gear ratio or manual retrieve figure.

Power and setup before your first trip

Confirm the MD 12000's specified power-supply voltage, current requirements, compatible lead and connection before choosing a battery or connecting to boat power. Do not assume another electric reel's power requirements apply.

Check supplied accessories and any additional equipment needed before heading offshore. Follow the manual's line-input, counter and control setup procedures, and monitor retrieval as your terminal rig approaches the boat.

After saltwater use, follow the model's cleaning and storage instructions. Protect electrical connections and do not assume the reel is submersible.
