The Shimano 24 Vanford FA is a lightweight spinning reel range for lure anglers who value outfit balance and responsive handling. With six options from the compact 500 through to the C5000XG, you can choose the reel weight and line capacity that suit your rod rather than carrying more reel than your fishing requires.

Choose your Vanford model

• FA 500: The lightest listed option at 140g, with 2.5kg maximum drag and 69cm retrieve per turn. Its listed PE 0.6/185m capacity makes it a starting point for compact light-line outfits where keeping reel weight down is the priority.
• FA C2000HG: Listed at 155g with 3kg maximum drag, 6.0:1 gearing and 81cm retrieve. Choose this when you want more line capacity and faster pickup than the 500 while keeping the outfit light. Listed capacity includes PE 1/300m.
• FA 2500HG: Weighs 175g with 9kg maximum drag, a 5.8:1 ratio and 86cm retrieve. Choose this when its listed capacity, including PE 1.2/270m, meets your needs without the extra capacity of the C3000HG.
• FA C3000HG: Weighs 180g with the same listed 9kg maximum drag, 5.8:1 ratio and 86cm retrieve as the 2500HG. Its greater listed capacity, including PE 1.5/270m, is the main reason to step up, for an additional 5g.
• FA 4000: Listed at 215g with 11kg maximum drag and PE 2/240m capacity. Choose this when your rod and line requirements call for more capacity than the smaller models. 
• FA C5000XG: Listed at 225g with 11kg maximum drag and 101cm retrieve per turn. Its PE 2/300m capacity provides more line at that rating than the 4000 for an additional 10g.

Weight, capacity and line pickup

A larger size does not always mean a faster retrieve. The 2500HG and C3000HG both retrieve a listed 86cm per turn, so the choice between them is chiefly capacity and weight. Faster line pickup can help you take up slack between lure movements without requiring you to work the lure faster.

HG and XG identify high-speed and extra-high-speed options. Compare the actual retrieve per handle turn alongside the gear ratio, because spool size also affects how much line is picked up.

Vanford or Stradic FM?

If keeping reel weight down is a priority, the Vanford offers a useful comparison with the Stradic FM. The Vanford 2500HG is listed at 175g versus 220g for the Stradic FM 2500HG; both list 86cm retrieve per turn and 9kg maximum drag. Weight is one part of the choice, so also check capacity, rod balance and the exact model specifications.
