Shimano Stradic FM Spin Reel
The Shimano Stradic FM combines cold-forged HAGANE gearing with MicroModule II refinement for smooth winding, with InfinityDrive supporting rotation under load. From the lighter 1000HG and 2000HG options through to the 5000XG, this range gives you a choice of reel weights, line capacities and retrieve speeds to match your outfit.
For a session of repeated casts and retrieves, start with a reel that balances your rod comfortably. Then check that its braid capacity and line pickup suit your fishing, rather than choosing on size number or maximum drag alone.
Choosing your Stradic FM model
- 1000HG and 2000HG: Both are listed at 185g with 3kg maximum drag. They differ in line capacity and retrieve: 75cm per turn for the 1000HG and 81cm for the 2000HG. Compare these first when keeping reel weight down is a priority.
- 2500HG and 3000HG: Listed at 220g and 225g respectively, both with 9kg maximum drag and 86cm retrieve per turn. The key comparison is spool capacity: the 3000 option holds more line at the shared PE ratings listed in the specifications.
- 4000FM and 4000XG: Both weigh 275g. The 4000FM has a 5.3:1 gear ratio, while the 4000XG has a faster 6.2:1 gear ratio. Choose between them based on your preferred gearing, without a difference in reel weight.
- 5000XG: Listed at 290g with 11kg maximum drag, PE 2/300m capacity and 101cm retrieve per turn. Compare this when you need more line capacity than the smaller options provide.
Understanding the model names
FM identifies this Stradic generation. HG and XG identify high-speed and extra-high-speed options. Compare the actual centimetres retrieved per handle turn as well as the gear ratio, because spool size also affects line pickup. The 4000FM is the 5.3:1 option, while the 4000XG is the 6.2:1 option; both weigh 275g.

Check model-specific weight, line capacity, retrieve and maximum drag in the specifications. PE capacity figures are a guide and actual capacity depends on the braid used. Maximum drag is not a recommended fishing setting; match your working drag to your line, leader and rod.
