Shimano Talica 2 Speed Overhead Reel
The Shimano Talica two-speed range gives offshore anglers a choice of fast line pickup and lower gearing for winding under load. Six models, from 12A to 50A, cover different line capacities and outfit weights for bait fishing, jigging and trolling setups.
As a fight changes, high gear helps recover slack and low gear gives you a lower-geared winding option. Choose the reel around your line diameter, required capacity and rod, then compare the weight you will be handling throughout a session.
Choose your Talica two-speed model
- 12A: The lightest in the range at 705g, with 20kg max drag. Ideal for live baiting and jigging for Kingfish, Amberjack and smaller Tuna. Mono capacity: 320m of 20lb. Suggested braid backing: approximately 300–400m of 50lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 20lb mono.
- 16A: A compact but powerful offshore reel with 20kg max drag, ideal for larger Kingfish, Yellowfin Tuna and Striped Marlin. Mono capacity: 400m of 20lb. Suggested braid backing: approximately 400–500m of 50lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 20lb mono.
- 20A: A versatile offshore game reel with 22.5kg max drag, suited to Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Dogtooth Tuna and large Kingfish. Mono capacity: 430m of 30lb. Suggested braid backing: approximately 400–550m of 65lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 30lb mono.
- 25A: Offers the same 22.5kg max drag as the 20A, but with additional line capacity for larger Tuna, Marlin and other powerful offshore species. Mono capacity: 500m of 30lb. Suggested braid backing: approximately 550–700m of 65lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 30lb mono.
- 40A: A serious heavy-tackle reel with 30kg max drag, built for targeting large Yellowfin Tuna, Blue Marlin and other hard-fighting game fish. Mono capacity: 420m of approximately 50lb mono (0.70mm). Suggested braid backing: approximately 600–750m of 100lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 50lb mono.
- 50A: The largest Talica in the range, with 30kg max drag and increased line capacity for giant Tuna, Blue Marlin and demanding offshore game fishing. Mono capacity: 400m of approximately 80lb mono (0.81mm). Suggested braid backing: approximately 650–800m of 130lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 80lb mono.
Note - Mono capacities are based on Shimano's published diameter specifications, with approximate pound-class equivalents. Suggested braid backing lengths are indicative estimates rather than verified combined capacities. Actual fill varies with braid diameter, mono topshot length and spooling tension.
Compare capacity at the same diameter
The specification table expresses mono capacity as line diameter in millimetres and length in metres, not kilograms/metres. Compare like-for-like diameters when choosing a size. For example, the 20A carries a listed 290m of 0.66mm mono and the 25A carries 385m at that same diameter.
Do not use these mono figures as braid capacities. Check the actual braid diameter and allow for backing or a mono top shot when planning your spool fill.
Two gears, two winding options
High gear is useful for taking up slack or retrieving line quickly. Low gear gives you lower gearing when winding against resistance. Line pickup is the more direct comparison for how much line comes back per turn; gear ratio alone does not tell the whole story.
