Product Description
Shimano Tiagra Overhead Reel
The Shimano Tiagra is a two-speed overhead reel range for offshore game fishing. A machined, one-piece aluminium frame supports the gearing under load, while high and low gears let you change your winding approach during a fight.
Building a game outfit starts with the line you intend to fish and how much you need to carry. Choose your Tiagra around that capacity, your rod and the way the outfit will be used, then weigh up reel weight and high/low gearing. The largest reel is not automatically the best match.
Choose your Tiagra model
The legendary Shimano Tiagra range is built for serious offshore game fishing, from chasing Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin to battling massive Bluefin and other hard-fighting pelagic species. Here's how to choose the right model for your setup.
- 16: The lightest in the range at 1,077g, with 13kg max drag. Ideal for light-tackle game fishing targeting smaller Tuna, Sailfish and Striped Marlin. Mono capacity: 860m of 8kg (17lb). Suggested braid backing: 400–600m of 50lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 20lb mono.
- 20A: A compact game reel with 16kg max drag, ideal for Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish and Striped Marlin. Mono capacity: 630m of 9kg (20lb). Suggested braid backing: 500–700m of 50lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 20lb mono.
- 30A: A versatile all-round game reel with 15kg max drag, popular for Yellowfin Tuna, Striped Marlin and other medium-sized game fish. Mono capacity: 640m of 14kg (30lb). Suggested braid backing: 500–700m of 65lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 30lb mono.
- 30WLRSA: A heavier line-class option suited to larger Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin. Mono capacity: 500m of 24kg (50lb). Suggested braid backing: 500–700m of 80lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 50lb mono.
- 50A: A serious game reel with 20kg max drag, ideal for Marlin, larger Tuna and other powerful offshore species. Mono capacity: 500m of 24kg (50lb). Suggested braid backing: 500–700m of 80lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 50lb mono.
- 50WA: Offers the same 20kg max drag as the 50A, but with additional line capacity for Marlin and large Tuna. Mono capacity: 750m of 24kg (50lb). Suggested braid backing: 700–900m of 80lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 50lb mono.
- 50WLRSA: A heavy-duty option designed for heavy-tackle Marlin fishing and demanding big-game applications. Mono capacity: 480m of 37kg (80lb). Suggested braid backing: 600–800m of 130lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 80lb mono.
- 80WA: A serious big-game reel built for Blue Marlin, large Bluefin Tuna and other trophy game fish. Mono capacity: 820m of 37kg (80lb). Suggested braid backing: 700–900m of 130lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 80lb mono.
- 130A: The ultimate heavy-tackle Tiagra, designed for giant Blue Marlin, massive Tuna and the toughest offshore game-fishing applications. Mono capacity: 900m of 60kg (130lb). Suggested braid backing: 800–1,000m of 200lb braid with a 100–150m topshot of 130lb mono.
Mono capacities are based on the supplied specifications. Braid backing lengths are broad estimates rather than verified capacities. Actual fill depends on line diameter, topshot length and spooling tension, so confirm the combination before spooling.
Why two speeds?
High gear provides more line pickup per handle turn, while low gear offers lower gearing for winding under load. For example, the 50A lists 94cm pickup in high gear and 38cm in low gear. Use the gear that suits the situation rather than relying on high gear throughout a fight.
Understanding line capacity
The specification table lists mono capacity in kilograms/metres and braid capacity in pounds/yards. Keep those units separate when planning a spool fill. Capacities depend on line diameter, so use the figures as a guide for the actual line you intend to load.
A higher maximum-drag figure does not replace a capacity comparison. The 20A lists 16kg maximum drag while the 30A lists 15kg; model size is not a simple ladder of increasing drag.
Key features
- One-piece aluminium frame: A rigid housing that supports the reel's internal components under load.
- Two-speed gearing: High and low ratios provide a choice of line pickup and winding leverage.
- Hydrothermal drag system: Designed for controlled, consistent line release during demanding fights.
- Audible ratchet: Helps alert the crew when line is being taken.
Before you choose
Check the full model code, reel weight, line capacity and both gear ratios against your rod and intended setup. Maximum drag is a reel specification, not a recommended fishing setting; set your working drag to suit your line, connections, rod and fishing system.
